Holiday Moving Tips

Between buying presents, decorating your home, hosting and attending holiday parties, and more, the holidays are not the best time of year to plan a move. That being said, sometimes this life event is simply unavoidable. For those of you relocating in the near future, never fear! The Mobile Attic is here to offer our advice and services to help you get through this process as smoothly and stress-free as possible.

Spread Out Your Packing Schedule

christmas tree and moving boxesIt may be tempting to put off packing until the week before your move, but this is something we don’t recommend. If you have a few weeks (or months), spread your packing schedule out as much as possible. Start with the items you don’t use on a regular basis (like all of those things in your storage closet or in the basement), then move on from there. Trust us – this will really help streamline things come moving day!

Fortunately, we have a way to help you make this process as easy as possible. You can simply rent a moving container from us weeks in advance, fill it at your own pace, then call us back when you need it moved. You won’t be forced to get everything done in one day (like you would with a moving van), and you can easily pack things up ahead of time. Along with this, the containers are delivered directly to your home, so you’ll be able to easily access anything you’ve previously packed, should the need arise.

Call today to speak with us about what size container would work best with your needs, and we can get something set up. When you work with The Mobile Attic, it’s all about you!

Plan For Unexpected Expenses

Now, the holidays are known for putting a bit of a strain on anyone’s budget and throwing a move into the mix doesn’t make things any easier. Make sure you confirm and track all payments with the companies you are working with, and set aside as much as you can for those unexpected expenses that are bound to pop up along the way.

Keep in mind that this may put a dent in your holiday budget – and that’s ok! Anyone who is aware of your situation will understand, and it’s okay to keep things simple for one year. In the long run, you’ll be happy you planned ahead and maintained a steady budget.

Have Extra Boxes & Wrapping Paper? Perfect!

As we said, big moves tend to cost more than we plan for, but you can save a bit here and there by reusing boxes from any gifts for packing purposes. Along with this, be sure to hang onto that old wrapping paper! It could serve as an excellent cushion for all of your breakable items, as well as save you some money on bubble wrap.

Little things like these add up, so take advantage as much as possible. You’ll be surprised at how much you could save by taking a few shortcuts here and there.

Make A Donation Box

The holidays are all about giving, so consider donating things around the home. This means less packing for you, and countless other families could benefit from your generosity. Moving is a time for fresh starts and new beginnings, so go through your home and clear out all that stuff that has been building up dust in your closet. You’ll be helping others, and we guarantee you’ll feel a weight lifted off of your shoulders at the end of it all – it’s a win all around.

Prepare For All Types Of Weather

You never know what the weather will bring, especially here in Nashville, so be prepared for cold temperatures, ice, and snow. Make sure you keep your winter coats, gloves, hats, and boots out so that you can keep as warm as possible when hauling boxes out of your home. And don’t forget the snow pants for the kids, either! They may want to play outside while you’re busy loading up, which is great for everyone – they burn energy and you have the space you need to stay as productive as possible.

Some other weather-related tips include:

  • Pack as much as you can in water-proof containers to ensure nothing gets damaged.
  • Put cardboard or old sheets by the front door to minimize tracking into the house and to prevent falls and slips.
  • Invest in rock salt for your driveway, outdoor steps, and sidewalks to ensure no accidents occur.
  • Make certain the heat is on and running in your new home, so you can stay warm and comfortable in your new space.
  • Keep a shovel handy.

Maintain That Holiday Spirit!

Stressful events like this can put a damper on anyone’s spirit in a hurry, but we urge you to make sure you’re still setting aside time to celebrate and appreciate the holidays. Plan a couple of family outings where you and your loved ones can get away from the stress of it all and enjoy some time out together. Also, don’t pack away all of your decor. Leave at least some of your Christmas-themed items out, so you maintain a festive ambiance.

Christmas is a special time of year, and it always comes and goes too fast, so enjoy it as much as you can! And if you need a hand, you know who to call – The Mobile Attic crew!
